Sunday Snippets - follow your work routine (as much as possible) 🔄
Happy Sunday 📰
Welcome to another edition of Sunday Snippets. As someone who spent more than 2.5 years looking for a job, I'm offering some tips that may help you while you're searching for your next full-time role. This is not professional advice, just some things you may want to think about.
Today's tip: follow your work routine (as much as possible) 🔄
Some people let the lack of having a job take over their life. They go to bed when they want and get up when they want - they essentially live like they're in college but don't go to classes. That's fine in the beginning, maybe you're navigating an unexpected layoff and need to take a little time to digest that. But at some point, you need to take the job search seriously and treat it like a job. Living like you have no responsibilities can quickly lead to a loss of control of your time. You can't control time but you can control how you spend it.
I know someone who missed an in-person interview because they had developed the habit of going to bed late and getting up late. This had been going on for close to a year and when they finally got an interview, they figured they'd be able to resume their early "getting ready for work" mornings by just setting their alarm. Unfortunately, they slept through their alarm and missed the interview and as you can guess, they weren't given a second chance to make it up (whether or not that was fair has been debated but in today's job market, it's a reminder that you may only get one chance - don't sleep through it).
Make an effort to stay on your work routine, it'll be much easier to get back into the swing of things when you do land that job.
Hang in there job seekers 🧗♀️
